Lessons
Can you attend while working?
The SciComm Master is designed to accommodate working professionals by allowing you to pace yourself throughout the course duration and attend lessons while developing your skills without compromising your work responsibilities. Nevertheless, even as we strive to keep the workload manageable, the program remains quite demanding and requires significant commitment.
How are the lessons scheduled?
The lessons will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from September through March. Lessons are set for afternoons, around 16:00 to 19:00 CET
The expected time commitment will be approximately 10 hours per week, consisting of 6 hours of synchronous online lessons and an additional 3-4 hours for assignments.
Are online lessons live or recorded?
Lessons are conducted live through synchronous sessions held twice weekly, designed to keep our global student community connected despite varying time zones. The interactive, seminar-style format enables meaningful engagement with both fellow professionals and expert faculty on topics crucial to your career advancement. To ensure flexibility for working professionals, we record all sessions so you can catch up on any content missed due to scheduling conflicts, time zone challenges, or technical difficulties.
Which are the requirement to pass each course?
To pass each course, you must fulfill a minimum attendance of 70%.
Additionally, you must complete and pass the required assessments. Assessments may include written or oral tests, as determined by the course instructor.
If you haven’t reached this threshold, don’t worry, we will give you the opportunity to catch up and stay on track through additional lectures and/or assignments, to demonstrate you have achieved the learning goals.
However, it’s crucial to emphasize that if, by the end of the master’s program, you haven’t met the minimum attendance requirement, you will not be eligible for graduation.
Students who fail to meet the minimum attendance requirement (70% of the remote teaching hours) and/or do not pass the required verification tests will not be eligible for the 1st level University Master’s Degree.
Nevertheless, they will receive a certificate indicating their actual attendance, the list of activities they participated in, and the results of any tests they passed.
How do you help students to overcome isolation and procrastination?
The master offers an innovative online learning experience structured to help you focus and maintain the self-discipline needed to study remotely.
We will start a chat on Telegram to connect with you before the course begins, or shortly after, to clear up any questions you have about the syllabus or requirements, and to enable students to connect among them.
We feel that establishing a relationship with you early on will help you build trust and understanding throughout the term, especially since you may not be able to meet in person.
During the term, from time to time we will schedule online meetings as well, to stay in touch with you and/or to coordinate more formal study group opportunities where you can participate in sessions organized by us, with a facilitator leading the discussion.
Also, our staff will support you with any administrative or technical queries you might have, providing you with maximum personal benefit and minimal time spent.
Internships
Is the internship mandatory?
Yes, the internship is a compulsory component of the program and is required for graduation. It takes place during the second semester (typically February-May) and requires a minimum of 250 hours completed over a two-month period.
How are internships structured?
Internships are designed around a communication project, jointly defined by the student, the Host Organization, and the Master’s coordinator.
They are an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, test a professional role, and gain experience within a specific institution or sector, whether public or private, in Italy or abroad.
Can students choose where they want to intern?
Students may express a preference for a specific organization. However, host institutions review CVs and select candidates based on the profile they consider most suitable.
It may happen that:
- – an organization selects a different student,
- – none of the students’ profiles match the organization’s expectations,
- – or an organization ultimately decides not to activate the position.
In such cases, the internship will not be activated, and students may need to consider alternative options.
In which formats can the internship be completed?
1. At a Host Organization
Internships may take place in person, online, or in hybrid mode depending on the Host Organization’s structure and agreement with the program.
Students may:
apply at a host Organisation through the University’s Career Services,
choose from organizations already affiliated with the program,
or propose new organizations.
If a student proposes a new organization in Italy, the program will contact the institution to verify its availability and activate the agreement if appropriate.
2. Within the student’s current workplace
Students who are already employed may complete their internship at their workplace, provided the project is clearly relevant to science communication and formally approved.
3. At the University of Trento (online only)
Internships with the University of Trento are available exclusively in online mode. On-site placements are not permitted. International students cannot travel to Italy solely for the purpose of completing their internship.
4. Through recognition of professional work
Students already working in communication during the program may request formal recognition of their professional activity in place of the internship, subject to evaluation and approval.
Does the internship create an employment relationship?
No. The internship does not constitute an employment contract with the Host Organization.
Internships within the SciComm Master’s program are curricular internships and are therefore not remunerated. They are part of the academic training pathway and are regulated as educational activities, not employment relationships.
What about international students?
International students residing outside Italy must secure their internship independently.
The program can:
provide support letters,
assist with administrative procedures,
and facilitate formal documentation.
However, the program’s institutional network does not extend to all countries, so students abroad are responsible for identifying and securing their placement.
International students residing in Italy may:
choose from organizations already affiliated with the program,
or propose new Italian organizations, which the program will contact to verify availability.
Is it possible for an international student to come to Italy to complete the internship?
From a regulatory standpoint, there is no formal prohibition preventing an international student from carrying out the internship in Italy. However, several practical and legal limitations must be carefully considered.
Non-EU citizens generally require a visa in order to undertake an internship in Italy. The issuance of a visa is not automatic and may be refused, particularly in light of the fact that the Master’s program is delivered online and allows internships to be completed remotely.
Visa procedures can be lengthy and complex, with the risk that delays may prevent the student from completing the required 250 hours within the established timeframe. In such cases, the Master’s diploma cannot be awarded.
For internships carried out in Italy, students must demonstrate a certified C1 level of Italian. If the internship involves writing or editing professional texts in Italian, native or near-native proficiency is required.
In no case will the Master’s program or the Host Organization cover travel expenses, accommodation, or living costs.
Students considering an in-person internship in Italy are strongly advised to first contact the Master’s coordinator to verify whether a placement in Italy is feasible and whether an invitation letter can be issued.
What about Italian students who wish to intern abroad?
The same rules described above for international students residing outside Italy apply.
Italian students who wish to complete their internship outside Italy must independently secure the placement. The program will assist with administrative formalities but cannot guarantee placement through its network.
What happens if I do not complete the internship within the required timeframe?
The internship is a mandatory component of the program and a formal requirement for graduation.
If a student does not complete the required 250 hours within the established timeframe, they cannot obtain the Master’s diploma.
In such cases, the University may issue a certificate of attendance for the courses successfully completed, but the academic degree cannot be awarded without fulfillment of the internship requirement.
Where can I find full information about the internship procedure?
For detailed information and step-by-step instructions, visit the dedicated internship page.

International Students
Can international students obtain a visa to attend the programme?
No. The Master’s program is delivered entirely online and does not require physical attendance in Italy.
For this reason, the University cannot issue invitation letters or supporting documentation for the purpose of obtaining a study visa.
Students are therefore not eligible to apply for a visa on the basis of enrollment in this program.
If you encounter any technical difficulties or have questions about the application process, our admissions support team is available to assist you.
